Type the letters on your rack and this tool searches the full word list for everything you're able to play. Use ? for each blank tile, add a board pattern if some letters are already fixed by tiles on the board, or set an exact length to narrow things down.
How the Word Finder works
Type the letters on your rack and the Finder checks every possible combination of those letters — and any subset of them — against the full UK or US dictionary, then shows you everything that's actually playable. It isn't limited to using all your letters, so a seven-letter rack can still return three, four and five-letter results alongside anything longer. Add a ? for each blank tile and the Finder treats it as a wildcard, trying every letter of the alphabet in that position.
The board pattern field is for when some of your letters are already fixed by tiles on the board. If you've got a rack of D, C, E, I, L, O, R and there's already a C two squares in and an E at the end of a four-letter gap, typing c__e narrows the results to four-letter words that fit — CIDE, COLE, CORE and so on — instead of making you scroll through every word your rack could form.
Worked example
Say your rack is RETSINA? — seven letters plus a blank. Search with no pattern and no length filter and the Finder returns everything from short plays like SIT and RAN up through seven-letter words like NASTIER and RETAINS, plus what the blank can unlock, such as RETINAS or STEARIN. Narrow to "7 letters" if you're specifically hunting for a bingo, or add a pattern if a couple of squares are already fixed by tiles on the board.
Tips for using it well
- Search with no pattern first to see everything available, then narrow with a pattern once you know which squares you need to fit.
- If you're stuck, try setting length to "any" — sometimes the highest-scoring play is shorter than you'd expect, especially with a rack full of high-value letters.
- Use the Validator to double-check a specific word if you're not sure it's really valid before committing a turn to it.
Common questions
Does it use all my letters?
No — it searches every combination and subset of your rack, so you'll see short words alongside long ones. If you only want plays that use every tile, try the Anagram Solver instead.
What word list does it use?
Whichever you've selected in the toggle at the top of the page — UK (Collins-style, YAWL) or US (TWL-style, ENABLE1). Switch anytime and the results update to match.
Can I search by pattern alone, without a rack?
Yes — leave the rack field empty and just fill in the board pattern to see every word that fits, regardless of what's on your rack.
